Barrel racing a family tradition for sophomore Macey Frost

Ever since she can remember, sophomore Macey Frost has been riding, competing and taking care of horses.

“Barrels are my favorite event to compete in,”  Frost said. “Even though it’s a lot of work, it’s totally worth it.”

Barrel racing consists of three barrels in a clover leaf pattern that times the rider. Frost enjoys competing against other riders in this event because they all share the same passion for riding as she does.

“Rodeo has been a family tradition since my grandma was little,” Frost said. “I’ve been taught by the best.”

Working with the horses daily is one of the main things that Frost does to work up to her big competitions. On the day of the rodeo, Frost checks her horses to make sure that they aren’t hurt and that the saddle is in good shape to ride.

“My favorite Rodeo that I compete in is in Concordia, Kansas,” Frost said. “Most of my family lives there so it is good to meet up with them during Rodeo week.”

Frost has cousins and an Aunt and Uncle that live in Concordia that also compete in Rodeos with her.

“I have two horses that I ride,” Frost said. “Their names are Richard and Slick, but Slick is my favorite.”

Frost may show a  little more love to Slick but also rides Richard as much as possible.

Another event that the sophomore competes in is pole racing. In this event, six poles are set up and the rider has to weave in and out of them as fast as they can.

“Poles isn’t my favorite,” Frost said. “It’s definitely a challenge, and you have to have the right technique or else you can hurt your horse.”

Frost spends multiple hours a week getting her horses ready but, she’s not letting it stop her from competing in her family tradition; the rodeo.
