This year’s musical, “Oklahoma!”

This years musical, Oklahoma!

This fall, the Baldwin High School theatre department is putting on Rodger and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” It’s a  story about a cowboy, Curly McLain (played by Senior Wyatt Slavin) and his romance with the farm girl Laurey Williams (played by Junior Hannah Parks).

“This year’s musical ,Oklahoma, will be a great show, I can tell you already,” said Slavin. “We have been hard at work on the dancing and singing with our new vocal musical teacher this year, Mrs. Buffum, and Mrs. Cook has been creating some wonderful scenes that the audience will enjoy. I hope we can have both opening and closing nights be sell outs. As long as we spread the word it shouldn’t be a problem.”

The leads are Slavin as Curly McLain and Parks as Laurey Williams. They hope to give the audience a memorable performance with their characters.

“This year I was cast as one of the lead roles in Oklahoma, a cowboy named Curly,” Wyatt Slavin said. “I really enjoy singing his songs and creating actions that fit his character. And I can’t wait to see how it all comes together on stage.”

Another lead in the musical is Freshman Lyle Story. He plays Jud Fry, the mysterious and dangerous loner who tries to win the hand of Laurey Williams. He presents the conflict in the story, threatening the love between the two leads.

“I did not go for Jud Fry, I just hoped I would get a part honestly,” Story said. “I didn’t honestly care if I was a dancer or a background singer or whatever. I didn’t even care if I got the main part or not.”

The musical will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20 and 21 in the PAC.
