Senior participates in first ever half marathon

Over the past decade, the number of half marathon participants has doubled making the 13.2 mile run one of the fastest growing sports in the world (Runners World).

Adding to the growing number of runners is BHS senior Cameryn Galvan. She ran in her first ever half marathon on Sept. 28 2014. Galvan finished fourth out of ten girls in her age division in the GoGirl Marathon. This marathon was held in support of The Susan G. Komen for the Cure The Greater Kansas City Area Foundation, WIN for KC, and Girls on the Run.

Galvan had been training for the past three months with a consistent routine.

“As far as a routine, speed workouts would be Mondays, Thursdays would be hill workouts, Saturdays would be long run days and days in between were just regular runs,” Galvan said.

Galvan decided to take up running so she could run along side her mom.

“My mom runs a lot. She does half marathons and marathons and she is constantly training,” Galvan said. “I started running with her here and there and decided I wanted to start running longer distances so she and I could run together.”

She was satisfied with the outcome of her race but is always looking to improve as she continues to run.

“I thought I did pretty good for my first half. I finished in 2:22:47 seconds,” Galvan said. “I just hope to continue doing half marathons and maybe get a faster time, I’m not all about speed like a lot of people but it is nice to see that you’re getting faster.”

Galvan is planning on participating other marathons in the upcoming months.

“I am hoping to do do the Kansas Half Marathon on Nov. 2nd and the Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in California during my senior trip in the summer,” Galvan said.
