Volleyball team plays for cure at 4th annual Dig Pink

All three BHS volleyball teams were playing for something more than just a win last Tuesday night. The teams hosted Ottawa in the annual Dig Pink Night. The freshman and varsity teams swept Ottawa while the JV team fell short.

To former coach Marilee Valentine, the night has a special place in her heart.

“This night means so much to my family due to the way we were impacted by cancer,” Valentine said. “It’s such a horrible disease that I hope the money raised  can help fund research so other families don’t have to go through it.”

The total for the evening is to be estimated to be around $3,000.

“The Shirt Shack was amazing and surprised us by donating ALL of the cotton T-shirts,” Valentine said. “About $1000 of the profits was a result of their donation.”

Coach Jill Brown was satisfied with the way her varsity team played.

“As a whole, I think we played pretty well Tuesday against Ottawa,” Brown said. “The first set was probably the best set we’ve put together this season.”

For senior Jordan Hoffman, this was her last time playing for Dig Pink.

“It was a really sentimental night to me along with everyone else in the gym,” Hoffman said.  “Playing for a cause that’s bigger than me or a volleyball game is really something great.”

Hoffman thought that everyone gave a hundred percent on the court.

“Overall that was the best we have ever played as a team,” Hoffman said.

Valentine focuses on finding the positives in a horrible disease.

“The Stand Up 2 Cancer fight is a way of taking negative feelings and thoughts and turning it into a positive, productive event,” Valentine said.
