Girls soccer begins last season of being self-funded

The Bulldogs girls soccer team begins the climb of its final season as an self-funded sport at USD 348. Girls soccer has had hold fund raisers for the previous two season and will have to this year, but with the school board vote girls soccer is now an official sport.

Junior soccer player Sierra McKinney has played since the team was separated from the boys team in 2011 season for a three-year trial period.

“It feels great, I think it brought a lot of stress off of the program and all the girls knowing this will be the last year we have to fund everything. It will be good next year to fully focus on the team and building skill rather than fundraising to keep the program alive” McKinney said.

The team has 23 girls out for this spring season, six of them are seniors. Baldwin will be challenged throughout the season playing bigger schools such as Lawrence, Emporia, Topeka-Hayden, and Piper. The girls will play at LHS on April 1st.

“We discovered some of our weaknesses and got a feel for playing, especially in harsher conditions. If we can connect as a team, we have a very good chance of beating LHS, who is obviously, a much larger school,” senior Brenna Johnson said.
