Teens may eat more fast food than parents realize

After a long day of school, some students may have another activity to look forward to. A survey was recently passed around the school to find out how much and what fast food is consumed throughout an average week.

According to the survey, 82% of the student body consumes at least one fast food meal a week. While some could argue that most of them work it out through sports or workouts, nearly 58% of the students asked were not participating in any out of school physical activity.

Just one meal a week can’t hurt anyone is the motto that many students of that 58% have adopted, while they don’t know that almost 30% of the student population eats fast food meals for half of the week or more.

These are the top three fast food restaurants the students told us. A common favorite of the school is Chipotle, and tailing behind by only 3% is Sonic, which happens to be a local site. Lastly but not least, is Dairy Queen which is at quite a distance if you consider the drive from Baldwin to Lawrence.

Goodcents or Subway is another option that was included in the survey as a healthier option than the rest. This vote got 25% out of the rest, which may actually surprise the average person.

The survey’s final question was one that could influence all of the votes above. Do student’s families sit down and have a meal at the dinner table? Most of these votes concluded that the average student will sit down with the family for 4 or 5 dinners a week. While a mere 8% of students don’t eat as a family as all. Which takes the homecooked meals out of the door. Leaving the individual to eat out for the entire week.

“Our society has turned into a ‘get it now’ mindset. Whether it be information, or food. This is one reason for the decline of the family and family values.” A surveyor told us.

“It is fairly convenient, not to mention how many restaurants are scattered about the place.” Another student said.

They can be far away, or right next to our front porches. Either way fast food will find itself a way to intertwine itself in our lives whether we like it or not.
