BHS has a long tradition of winning sports programs. However, this year has stood out more than any.

Bulldog sports teams have brought home five state trophies so far this year. It is thought by BHS many coaches that this could be the best year of sports the school has ever had.

The cross country teams brought home two state trophies in the fall. The boys placing first and the girls third. Junior Addie Dick was the top placer for the girls team, while George Letner lead the boys. The boys team will have five juniors returning as senior leaders and the girls will have seven.

“It is a really great accomplishment, for the students of the high school to have that many state trophies and its just really neat,” cross country coach Mike Spielman said. “All the different activities get to experience the state playoffs and state competitions and do really well in those things.”

The BHS volleyball team placed second at the 4A Div. II state championship, falling to Clay Center in the final. The team will have four juniors returning next year.

“It was awesome being a part of two and possibly three state titles. It shows that all of the hard work put in during the offseason can really pay off,” said senior Jordan Hoffman, who participates in volleyball, basketball and girls track and field. “I hope that winning state trophies brings more people to our sports programs and brings confidence to the returning people. As a senior I hoped to show younger kids how to be a leader for programs that got state titles.”

The BHS wrestling team brought home the first place trophy in the 4A state championship. Seven wrestlers finished in the top six of their weight class and two were state champions. Senior Jon Pratt and sophomore Thomas Lisher each won their weight class and gained big points for their team.

“It is exciting to be a part of a successful school with so many winning programs, I think the desire the be successful is contagious and leads over to each program,” wrestling coach Kit Harris said.

The BHS girls basketball team finished the season with a 21-4 record and a second place 4A Div. II trophy. The team easily made it through the Sub-State rounds to advance to Wichita for the state championship. The Bulldogs ended up losing 66-54 to Hugoton. Six juniors will be returning for the Bulldogs next season.

“Its been really exciting to see what all the stuff that Baldwin high school has done and it has been an amazing year,” girls basketball coach Bob Martin said. “We had a lot of different kids get to experience it, it was really exciting and a great experience to watch the success we had in all the hard work the high school athletes have done.”

Spring sport teams this season are hoping to add to the total. Girls Track and Field are coming back from a state championship while boys placed third last year. While girls soccer, boys tennis, baseball, softball and boys track and field look to also help continue
