Guys and Dolls cast prepares for annual Fall musical

The BHS musical cast is preparing for its annual Fall musical “Guys and Dolls.” There were about sixty students who auditioned, which is around the same number of students they have every year.

BHS choir director Beth Nelson was excited about the new cast.

“Around 60 kids auditioned,” Nelson said. “We lost some good seniors but gained a lot of new freshmen.”

Sophomore Hannah Parks was also excited about the new cast but is already missing the seniors.

“I’m going to miss them (the seniors). I feel like their positivity would make this show better,” Parks said. “But nevertheless this is an amazing super fun show and it’s going to be super good.”

“‘Guys and Dolls’ is a musical that takes place in the 1950s. It is a comedy about the life of gamblers in New York. It follows the complicated love life between a long time gambler and his fiancee. It also follows another man who bets he can pick up any girl he wishes. Nelson was excited about many aspects of this musical.

“I’m excited for opening night, the Hot Box dancers, Fugue for Tinhorns, and Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat,” Nelson said.

Parks is playing Sarah Brown, a main character. She was very excited to see that she was named a lead.

“I remember the first time I watched the movie I took a picture of the actress and posted it with the caption ‘I want to be this woman and shes my idol and one of my life goals is to play her’, and now I get to do that which is just incredible,” Parks said.

When Parks heard that they were doing “Guys and Dolls” she was very excited.

“Mrs. Cook stopped me in the hallway and told me with bright eyes that we are doing ‘Guys and Dolls’ and then I jumped up and down very happily,” Parks said.

Nelson is looking forward to the choreography and the choreographer they hired.

“I’m very excited that our choreographer April is back,” Nelson said. “She’s choreographed musicals for us in the past and is awesome.”

The opening night is Nov. 21 at the Performing Arts Center and closing night is Nov. 22. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults.
