Clay target team blasts way to first in state

A new club brought into BHS this year was the Clay Target Team, sophomores Brent Lantis and Blayne Chapman were inspired by the head coach, Ryan Reynolds to start this club.

“I was pursued by Ryan Reynolds, he said he wanted to start it and he had already got it approved by the school board and he said he needed my help to bring it to the student body and Brent and I decided we would do as much as we could to make it happen,” Chapman said.

There is quite a bit of a process to get a new club approved.

“We have to get approved by the school board and since it is not considered a sport in KSHSAA, we can not be a sport, we have to be considered as a club,” Chapman said. “We have to be approved by Stuco, and to be approved by stuco we had to have a constitution stating when we start practices, when you meet, and who is the captains or the presidents of your club.”

Anybody can be involved in this club if they have met the requirements.

“To get involved you have to find Brent or I and get the information you need to get. You need to have Hunters Safety and have a shotgun and bring your own ammunition. We meet every Tuesday and Saturday,” Chapman said.

The practices consist of having fun and shooting clay pigeons.

“We just show up and he says to go to our stations which are in front of the clay pigeon thrower and then you say ‘pull’ and you shoot clay pigeons,” Chapman said.

“It is relaxing, sometimes you get stressed out when you are in a sport or on a team, and it’s just like you are there and you’re having fun and it is not a super intimidating sport where the coaches are mad at you, everybody laughing, smiling, it’s a good time,” Chapman said.

The team is currently ranked first in the state.

“Everybody is shooting very well and is improving. We are just doing are best making our way up to the top and I am super excited for the State shoot,” Chapman said.
