Soccer team continuing winning ways

After losing many key players from last year’s season, BHS soccer has had to replace much of their team. Though losing them has been a challenge, coach Stacy Smith has been optimistic.

“We have lost some key players at the center positions going down the spine of the field,” Smith said. “And if your moving from forward to midfield, trying to rebuild the spine of the team, thats a lot of work but these guys have really stepped up.”

Coming from a 16-1-1 record from last season, communication has been key.

“They are learning to communicate, across the field to identify targets of opprotunity,” Smith said. “To work together and when to take it in to score and achieve our goals. That is what teamwork and communication is all about.”

The team is currently 9-1-1, its next game is against Eudora.

“Weve got a canceled game tomorrow, weve got three good practice days, thats pretty nice to have a couple good practices to transition,” Smith said. “I think having three practices before the next game helps performance adjustments on the field, so I’m pretty excited.”

Even with many more tough games ahead, Smith is confident they will do great.

“The Varisty team has pretty much played as well at their position,” Smith said. “We get into games with really quality opponents who have good athleticism, fundamentles, using good tactics across the field, good attack formations, then we play them really well.”

The team practices hard with determination.

“That is the kind of team we are,” Smith said. “We do what we have to, when we have to.”
